Youngsters in care face college grant 'lottery'
Young people in care applying for college bursaries face a postcode lottery in getting financial help, according to a Scottish charity. Who Cares? Scotland says college discretion over bursary funding means some of the most vulnerable students in the country are barred from pursuing further education. And youngsters with experience of the care system are being put off further education altogether by a “complex and confusing” application process that is inflexible for those who do not come from traditional family settings. Some have been told to provide the salaries of their children’s home workers in their applications because they cannot do so for parents, the charity reported. Carly Edgar from Who Cares? Scotland said that this can be embarrassing for young people.
