Scottish National Dementia Conference: 1st May 2018
We will be holding our 2nd National Dementia Conference on the 1st May at the Concert Hall in Perth.
The theme of our 2018 conference will be 'Human Rights, Citizenship and Dementia'. This conference is free and is for people living with dementia, unpaid carers and those who work with and support them.
The conference will be interactive and dementia friendly, with a busy, informative and engaging marketplace where delegates will be able to meet a wide range of around 60 organisations who are doing work across Scotland to create better lives for people living with dementia and unpaid carers.
Invited speakers will address issues and barriers faced by people affected by dementia, and discuss how the proper application of rights and the upholding of citizenship can radically change how people with dementia and their carers are supported and respected in Scotland.
Contributions will include:
- Dr Donald Macaskill – Scottish Care
- Professor John Swinton, University of Aberdeen
- DEEP (Dementia Engagement and Empowerment Project)
- tide (Together in Dementia Everyday)
- Anna Buchanan - Director of the Life Changes Trust Dementia Programme
Bookings for this conference are being taken via Eventbrite. You can sign up here
Reasonable travel and accommodation costs will be covered for people with dementia and unpaid carers to attend.

Conferences by carers and for carers
NEXT CONFERENCE: EAST LOTHIAN, 22nd May.. sign up now!
The Life Changes Trust is funding and supporting carers of people with dementia to run their own local events in communities around Scotland.
On Saturday, 30 September 2017, the Trust hosted the first of these conferences, designed and organised by people with long experience of caring for someone living with dementia. This conference was for carers of people living with dementia, current or past, who lived in Glasgow, North Lanarkshire, South Lanarkshire, East Dunbartonshire, West Dunbartonshire, Renfrewshire or East Renfrewshire.
On Tuesday, 22 May 2018, we will be hosting a second event in East Lothian, once again organised and run by carers of people living with dementia, for carers of people living with dementia, who are unpaid. You can download our event flyer here
So if you care for - or have cared in the past for - your partner, another family member or a friend, unpaid, do come along. You just need to book your place.
To register, call or email Anne Miller:
0141 212 9615 OR email@example.com
Please sign up as soon as possible as places are limited.
A reasonable contribution to the cost of travel and for looking after the person with dementia to facilitate carers to attend is available. At the time of registering, we will explain how you can claim this using a simple form.
There will be other similar events in Scotland in the coming months, with the third in Aberdeen/Aberdeenshire.
These events are planned, developed and driven by a volunteer steering group of current or past carers, with full support from the Life Changes Trust and Tide.
The carers conference in Glasgow provided some valuable resources for those who attended, in the shape of a local directory of support and services available, and a checklist of things to help people caring for someone with dementia. In this video, Maureen, Myra and Annette, who were part of the steering group for the Glasgow conference, explain a bit more....
The Directory lists services and groups that could be helpful to people who care for those with dementia, listed by the geographical areas pertinent to this event. Further Directories will be produced as events take place across Scotland. Download the Directory here.
This is a resource to help those who care for someone with dementia to put in place the right systems and support, and where to turn to for advice. Download the Checklist here.

We will be holding our next 'by carers, for carers' conference in East Lothian, and another later in the year, in Aberdeen/Aberdeenshire. We plan to hold more events across the country as plans develop.
Our event in Glasgow was an enormous success, thanks in no small part to our wonderful steering group: Maureen, Myra, Bernard, Anne, Annette and Kathryn.
