Barnardo’s North Lanarkshire
Barnardo's North Lanarkshire was awarded £199,463 for the period of 2019 to 2022
The Life Changes Trust Home and Belonging initiative has been designed to provide an opportunity to re-imagine what a fulfilling future can look like for a young person with care experience once they move on from formal care, based around a safe, welcoming and personal space – their home.
It will support young people to find a strong sense of home and belonging in their own communities, recognising that “home is not a place, it is a feeling.” All of the projects take a service design approach, were designed with young people using creative approaches, and will involve young people with care experience in their delivery and evaluation.
Barnardo’s North Lanarkshire’s project will test an innovative, relationship-based approach to housing and support for young people with care experience.
The project will be run from Barnardo’s established Positive Destinations service in North Lanarkshire, well known to young people and partners. Befriender Families - local families or older adults - will be recruited to support young people with care experience living in their communities. The families will offer informal support in a natural, loving family environment, sharing family meals, going on outings etc. The Befriender Family will be authentic for the young person, not someone who has been paid to be in their lives.
This project aims to take a different approach, where young people with care experience are part of the planning process, where their views are paramount in the allocation of property and support given, where tenancies are of high quality and permanent, and young people are part of the research and recruitment of family befrienders. Services will be held accountable for all decisions made and will aim to work proactively with young people to avoid crisis situations. Young people with care experience will also be supported to become part of their community.
