Ceartas Advocacy Peer Support Cafe

The independent advocacy organisation Ceartas was awarded £82,000 in October 2015 to run until September 2020 for their project ‘De Café’.

De Café is an informal setting where people with dementia and their carers can meet and have a chat. It is a group for anyone living with, or concerned about, dementia or memory loss. As well as providing social support and a chance to swap stories and experiences, De Café is an opportunity to get information from Ceartas and other organisations, and updates about what is happening in the world of dementia.

It also provides opportunities to access Independent Advocacy, and to talk through any issues that individuals may be experiencing. They are lively places for receiving information, support, providing a place where people are treated with dignity and respect.

The funding award has allowed Ceartas to establish De Cafés in Kirkintilloch, Bishopbriggs, Bearsden and Milngavie, providing a focal point for activity as well as being a valuable means of peer support and information for people affected by dementia.

This project has already seen people with dementia and carers thrive, not just survive, with increased confidence and quality of life and a better understanding of Independent Advocacy and carer support services.
