Dementia Friendly Prestwick

Local Legacy Awards are funding local legacy partners to focus on two or more of three well-evaluated means of supporting people living with dementia and unpaid carers.

These are:

  • Dementia Friendly Communities
  • Peer Support
  • Meeting Centres

Local legacy partners will develop these three approaches, working with national legacy partners BOLD and About Dementia to share and embed learning across Scotland. This will include a true commitment to early evaluation, wide sharing of learning, learning from others, and seeking further ways to sustain this work beyond the funding of the Life Changes Trust.

Dementia Friendly Prestwick was awarded £100,000 for a legacy project running from April 2022 to August 2023. This project builds on work started in 2021 and has received 50% match funding from a private Trust representing Sir Samuel Brodie. Dementia Friendly Prestwick is now in the final stages of welcoming a royal patronage, and the private Trust aims to raise an additional £250,000 in 2022.

Dementia Friendly Prestwick will open a Meeting Centre in a central location in Prestwick, specifically focusing on people with early to moderate dementia, supporting the whole family from diagnosis, and signposting to other agencies as the dementia progresses. This will provide a safe place for people to offer informal support for their peers.

People with dementia will have access to information and support from a range of services, including the Community Mental Health Team one day per week, a local lawyer, optician, district nurse, podiatrist, physiotherapist, occupational therapist, psychologist, social services, nutritionists, and dementia trainers.
Dementia Friendly Prestwick will support efforts to open additional Meeting Centres, across South Ayrshire first, and then across Scotland.

They will also support the creation of a Scottish Meeting Centre Network, which will be a community of learning and practice.
