East Renfrewshire 'My House My Rules'

East Renfrewshire Council was awarded £285,000 for the period of 2019 to 2022

The Life Changes Trust Home and Belonging initiative has been designed to provide an opportunity to re-imagine what a fulfilling future can look like for a young person with care experience once they move on from formal care, based around a safe, welcoming and personal space – their home.

It will support young people to find a strong sense of home and belonging in their own communities, recognising that “home is not a place, it is a feeling.” All of the projects take a service design approach, were designed with young people using creative approaches, and will involve young people with care experience in their delivery and evaluation.

The overall aim for East Renfrewshire’s project is to ensure that young people with care experience are involved in all aspects of the planning, delivery and review of housing and support services that affect them.

The “My House My Rules Project”, named by young people with care experience, will ensure that they feel safe and supported in their own home. East Renfrewshire want to redesign and repurpose existing supported accommodation provision and ensure young people are at the heart and centre of the design.

Young people with care experience will invigorate, review, redesign and produce a vibrant, exciting place to stay. Communal space will be created where they can come together to learn new skills, increase confidence and ensure they are included in all aspects of their living environment. Traineeships will be offered in planning and designing so they can carry out works in the building including design, decoration and maintenance. The work will centre on the supported accommodation provision in the town of Barrhead but will involve young people with care experience from all over the authority.

This project will be carried out in collaboration with East Renfrewshire Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP), East Renfrewshire Council Housing Department and Barrhead Housing Association.
