Helm Training was awarded £200,000 for the period 2019 to 2022
The Life Changes Trust Home and Belonging initiative has been designed to provide an opportunity to re-imagine what a fulfilling future can look like for a young person with care experience once they move on from formal care, based around a safe, welcoming and personal space – their home.
It will support young people to find a strong sense of home and belonging in their own communities, recognising that “home is not a place, it is a feeling.” All of the projects take a service design approach, were designed with young people using creative approaches, and will involve young people with care experience in their delivery and evaluation.
Helm Training has identified that there are no options for young people with care experience aged 16+ in Dundee to choose to live together, sharing leisure and support facilities, with opportunities to gain skills and experience, access to peer mentoring, support, employability and education.
This project will see Helm co-design a new co-led enterprise with young people with care experience to provide rented homes within a refurbished building in Dundee.
The project will employ young people with care experience in key design, advisory and support roles, and will ensure that each of its aims is replicable all over Scotland. Helm want to establish a way to develop and sustain a community in Dundee where young people can have access to support for the transition into adult life, addressing a gap in current provision. The project will also set up a charitable enterprise which will be co-run by young people with care experience and explore how they can use individual funding entitlements (Participatory Budgeting). The enterprise will provide secure and flexible tenancies in homes designed for individual freedom, privacy and safety, together with a sense of community and access to support on site.
This project will be carried out in partnership with Hillcrest Housing Association, Dundee City Council, PB Partners, Dundee University (School of Education/Social Work) and V & A Dundee Design Team.
