MECOPP - Minority Ethnic Carers of Older People Project

Funding award of £50,000 from 2018 to 2020

The Life Changes Trust made a commitment to increased understanding about the particular issues that people from certain protected characteristic groups may face when they are affected by dementia.  One area we focussed on was those living with dementia and carers in Minority Ethnic Communities in Scotland. In April 2018, the Trust funded 4  Community projects.

MECCOP applied for funding to make their 3 R’s project accessible to people living with dementia and their carers.

The 3 R’s Project is a self-directed support legal rights project, which aims to help people understand their rights and access the support they are entitled to. The 3 R’s are the principles that the project is based on: Rights, Respect and Responsibilities.

The 3 R’s Project initially assisted individuals with social care support needs and third sector organisations which support individuals accessing self-directed support, and now provide training opportunities, events and web-based publications.

Areas of focus included awareness raising, post diagnostic support, challenging stigma and support to carers.

As with all our funded projects, we commissioned an evaluation of this funding. Blake Stevenson carried out the evaluation and published a report in autumn 2020. In December 2020, we also held a learning event webinar, to hear from some of our funded projects and to learn more about what the evaluation found.
