Sporting Memories Network CIC
Local Legacy Awards are funding local legacy partners to focus on two or more of three well-evaluated means of supporting people living with dementia and unpaid carers.
- Dementia Friendly Communities
- Peer Support
- Meeting Centres
Local legacy partners will develop these three approaches, working with national legacy partners BOLD and About Dementia to share and embed learning across Scotland. This will include a true commitment to early evaluation, wide sharing of learning, learning from others, and seeking further ways to sustain this work beyond the funding of the Life Changes Trust.
Sporting Memories Network CIC was awarded £ 119,961 for a two-year legacy project running from March 2022 to December 2023. This project has received 20% match funding from the William Grant Foundation.
Sporting Memories Network brings people together in a dementia friendly community of interest where they have opportunities to be part of something that is meaningful to them and spend time with others with similar interests.
With this funding, Sporting Memories Network will extend the delivery of their new blended model of delivering in-person and online community-based weekly Sporting Memories clubs by working with new partners, including professional sports clubs, local charities, libraries and health organisations.
They will also establish three new pilot dementia friendly Older People’s Sports and Social Clubs (OPSSCs) as exemplars which could become the basis for a new national network of such Clubs.
As with the Sporting Memories Clubs, they will be developed in partnership with local organisations. The clubs will deliver a weekly programme of activities tailored to suit the needs of older adults living with dementia within their local community, including reminiscence, buddying schemes and low-impact physical activities and games to build confidence, reignite connections and improve cognitive and physical resilience.
